Situated on the shores of Belfast Lough, Carrickfergus Sailing Club is in a prime location for racing, with great sailing waters right on our slipway. The club has hosted some prestigious events in its lifetime included several Irish & Ulster championships as well as the Optimist World Championships in 1997. The club has also developed some great sailors. These include Olympian Ryan Seaton and various British and Irish champions.
As well as hosting many open events the club also has a busy club racing schedule. In the winter both keelboats and dinghies race on a Sunday Morning, whilst in the summer keelboats race on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, dinghies on a Wednesday and juniors on a Friday. Fleets sailed at the club include NHC Keelboats, Ruffians, RS Elites, SB20s, RS400's, Lasers Toppers and Laser Bahias.
Each year we host our regatta which sees numerous classes from around the lough join us for a great day of racing and social events. Over the past few years we've also hosted a separate dinghy regatta with a committee boat start, which has been a great success every year. The club is also within Sailing Distance of all the clubs in the lough, allowing their events to be attended with ease.
The NHC has been designed to promote a single National Handicap scheme for Cruisers, giving regattas a uniform scheme that can be easily adopted for racing. We race both Restricted and Unrestricted versions of the class throughout the year.
The Ruffian 23 is a great one design racing boat, an extremely family-friendly boat despite its size. Regional events take place each year & the Northern Championships hosted by Carrickfergus Sailing Club.
The RS Elite so easily driven that consistently high speeds are achieved, both upwind and down - no high loads so perfect for both men and women of virtually all ages & rewards good sailors rather than the most physical teams.
The yacht is an open keelboat and is designed for racing with a crew of 3 whose maximum weight must not exceed 270 kg. With a high aspect ratio keel with a very high ballast ratio the yacht is very stable, but also quite fast due to the substantial sail area. The SB20 is perfect for competitive crews of all shapes, sizes and ages.
Designed by the legendary Uffa Fox in 1947, the 6m (20ft) Flying Fifteen has maintained its reputation as an exciting and competitive two-man racing craft. It provides access to sailing at reasonable prices for men and women from 15 to 75 and beyond.
The Laser is one of the most popular single-handed dinghies in the world. As of 2012, there are more than 200,000 boats worldwide. The Laser is simple to rig & provides very competitive racing.
Highly successful gennaker powered double handed race class and delivers great performance with exceptional handling.Nothing matches the RS400's balanced and responsive handling, its good manners in big breeze and the excitement of asymmetric racing in massive fleets.
While the Topper is predominantly a racing class now she offers so much more than just that. She is so simple, safe and stable that she inspires confidence in young or novice sailors. She offers pedigree handling and racy performance levels as competence levels grow and which other "beach-boats" can only dream of. Above all, the Topper is still a boat to have great fun sailing.
The Laser Bahia was designed with stability, safety and performance in mind. It was created for leisure and ease of use, but not at the expense of performance.
